Armagh Fun World Cup Project
Armagh City and District Council’s Good Relations Department, with support
from a number of local organisations and groups, are organising an Armagh Fun
World Cup Project for young people between the ages of 14 – 16 in August 2008.
The Armagh Fun World Cup Project is a 3 day fun football event and the aim of
the Project is “To provide young people from throughout Armagh City an
opportunity to come together, through a sporting event, to celebrate cultural
diversity"
The Project will give young people a diversionary activity to participate in
during the summer months and will encourage integration with other young people
from throughout the Armagh City area. A total of 8 teams will participate in the
event on a cross community basis and teams will represent different countries
rather than areas they are from. Examples of the Countries which teams will
represent are Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, India, China, Nigeria,
Russia and
Portugal.
Teams will be encouraged to develop their own kits, banners, flags etc. to
give them the opportunity to learn more about the culture and traditions of the
country they are representing- everything from what people wear, to the language
they speak - and the challenge is for the team to be as creative as possible in
representing the country visually and in a positive way.
Apart from playing football young people will be able to participate in a
number of off pitch activities. There will be opportunities for the young people
to participate in Penalty Kick competitions; crossbar challenges and a number of
other fun team games. There will also be a DJ playing music while the event is
going on and a number of informal health stands will
also be set up around
the pitch for young people to avail of
The Project will conclude with young people and parents attending a
presentation night where all participating teams and individuals will receive a
trophy and medal. This presentation night will adapt a cultural theme with
people from different ethnic minorities providing food and music to celebrate
cultural diversity.
It is important to emphasize that the Armagh Fun World Cup Project is a
community-based activity for both males and females. At present we are
recruiting teams from the Armagh City area to participate in this event.
The deadline for completed entry forms is Monday 14th July 2008
