Allotments: the way forward to A
Healthier Life
Armagh Allotments Ltd., a recently established Social Economy Enterprise, is
working in partnership with Armagh City and District Council to initiate and
reintroduce allotments for the residents of Armagh City.
There has been a re-awakening to the benefits of allotments, which stems from
the irrefutable benefits they have for communities: as unlike nature reserves
that teach urban children how precious nature is, allotments encourage children
and others to dig in, feel the benefits and reap the rewards rather than keep it
at arms length. Allotments are practical, functional and fun places of learning,
living and growing, and they offer city dwellers plenty of outdoor activity!
While allotments are generally for 'personal use' only, many people within
the allotment community tend to swap their surplus crops towards the end of the
season, encouraging networking and good relations between plot holders.
Communities and families benefit in so many ways from allotments - if things
get a bit hectic at home, allotments offer a deckchair, a newspaper and the
possibility of some peace and quiet for the afternoon.
With the increasing cost of basic food, the unnecessary need to import
vegetables that could be grown locally and the pressures families have in
providing affordable nutritional food the time has never been more appropriate
to have allotments available for everyone living in Armagh.
