Launch of Global Connections courses

The UPC has recently received funding from the Department of International Development to deliver a range of education courses around International Development issues. These courses will be of great value to community activists and interested groups and individuals who would like to learn about global issues and how they affect us locally.

We are currently recruiting for the first three of these courses. Courses are two days long and will run form 10:00 to 4:00 p.m. each day. All courses are free of charge and will be held at the Ulster Peoples College.

Millennium Development Goals                        28 and 29 October 2008

This course will examine local and global poverty issues and look at strategies used to address inequalities. It will focus primarily on the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals and how they are being addressed. It will also give participants an insight into global economic and political systems.

To register, please contact Grace Palmer on 028 90 330131 or grace@upclearn.org. Alternatively, please register online at www.ulsterpeoplescollege.org.uk.

Global Citizenship                                                 25 and 26 November 2008

This course will look at citizenship in global context and participants will explore key concepts, such as globalisation and interdependence. It will give participants an opportunity to think about issues of diversity, social justice and equality. It will be of use to all those who want to campaign around global issues.

Peace and Conflict                                                            11 and 12 December 2008

This course will be of great interest to community activists who would like to develop their understanding of peace processes and conflict. It will examine the causes of political conflict in divided societies and how peace building processes have been developed. Comparisons between Northern Ireland and other divided societies will help participants to gain a global perspective of local events.
