The Choices programme aims to
empower young women to make informed decisions about their sexual health,
relationships and lives in general and is specifically for young women under the
age of 25. The fpa offers Free Personal Development Programmes which are
person-centered, group-led and exploratory usually over a period of 4 – 6 weeks.
Ideally the groups are small in number and the young people themselves choose to
attend. A typical programme can include discussion on puberty, periods,
conception, contraception, relationships, self-esteem, consent, human rights and
much more. We do not distribute any form of contraception or give medical
advice; we simply provide relevant educational information to ensure young
people are aware of their human rights and issues that affect them.
Confidentiality and group safety are paramount and our workshops are designed
to maintain personal boundaries. The youth workers do not participate in the
workshops and if possible a room should be provided as we feel that the
effectiveness of the project is more successful when the group is closed.
My colleague Neil Decodts runs the ‘Bout Ye! programme, which is run
specifically for young boys and men under the age of 25. Further information
about fpa’s services can be found at www.fpa.org.uk
I will be available to carry out workshops from early March next year
(2009).
