Protect Life Resource Centres in the Southern Health and Social Care Trust Area

In October 2006, the Protect Life A Shared Vision – The Northern Ireland Suicide Prevention Strategy and Action Plan 2006 – 2011 was launched by the Department of Health and Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS). The Strategy’s overarching target is to reduce the suicide rate in Northern Ireland by 15% by 2011.
In response to the Protect Life Strategy, the Southern Health and Social Care Trust has established an Interagency Protect Life Implementation Group comprising representation from the voluntary, community and statutory sectors.

This group has developed a Suicide Prevention Action Plan for the Southern Trust area. One of the key objectives in the Action Plan is “To develop a model for locally based resource centres offering support and information” To this end the Trust, on behalf of the Protect Life Implementation Group has worked in partnership with local voluntary and community organisations to develop 7 Protect Life Resource Centres across the Southern Trust area.

These Centres will be points of contact in local areas that provide information, support and signposting for suicide and self-harm prevention related issues. These Centres will be operational from April 2008 and information on their location, opening hours and contact details are outlined below.

The Protect Life Resource Centres have been commissioned by the SHSSB and developed on a small budget relying on trained volunteers to deliver services. The Trust commends the host voluntary and community sector organisations for their outstanding commitment and support.
