Reclaim the Night
The UNISON Northern Ireland Women’s Committee has organised a ‘Reclaim the
Night’ candlelit procession for the centre of Belfast on Saturday 22nd November.
We will be assembling outside City Hall at 6.30pm, and will commence the short
procession at 6.45pm
Reclaim the Night is a UK wide organisation which seeks to draw attention to
the increasing levels of violent / sexual assaults against women on our streets.
Reclaim the Night believes much more needs to be done to tackle violence against
women, most importantly addressing the appallingly poor conviction rate for rape
and serious sexual assaults throughout the UK. The national average conviction
rate is 5%; sadly in Northern Ireland the figure is as low as 3%.
The procession in Belfast on the 22nd November will coincide with a similar
event in London, in which 1500 women participated last year. It should be
noted that while the vigil will be lead by women only, although male supporters
are more than welcome.
I would ask that you spare an hour or so to attend and protest both the
unacceptable levels of violence against women on our streets, and the current
legal frameworks which fail to punish the vast majority of those responsible for
ruining the lives of so many women.
