New Caring Support Service for Armagh &
Dungannon
Armagh’s network of community organisations has launched a new project aimed
at helping and supporting carers.
More than one in ten people in our community are unpaid carers, providing
help and support to a family member or friend who could not manage without
them. Many don’t consider themselves as carers and are simply fulfilling
their responsibility, and the majority are coping alone.
Armagh Confederation of Voluntary Groups felt that more needed to be done to
support carers in the area and helped to establish Armagh Carers group in
2004. Recently the Confederation secured funding from the Southern Health
and Social Care Trust to employ a part-time project officer for the Armagh and
Dungannon areas. Armagh City & District and Dungannon Borough Carers
Group will operate a drop-in centre providing support and information to carers
on various topics from benefits to respite care.
Through Lottery funding from Awards for All, they will also be able to offer
training and social and recreational activities to local carers. Through
personal experience the staff and management of the group are very aware of the
issues facing carers on a daily basis and would therefore urge any carers in the
Armagh or Dungannon areas to contact them.
The drop-in centre will operate on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8.30am to 2.00pm
at Armagh Confederation of Voluntary Groups, 1 College Street, Armagh or contact
Mandy on (028) 3752 2282 for more information.
